An older adult is treated for an injury resulting from a fall every 13 seconds. Common reasons for these falls are tripping over loose rugs, reduced muscle strength and medication side effects. Falls can be prevented by the use of a cane or walker, keeping rooms clutter-free, using skid-proof backs on rugs and adding additional lighting for better navigation. The National Council On Aging has developed resources to help reduce the risk of falls.
